AIPMO Review
Rating: 6.6 – Agile Kata by Joe Krebs takes the reader into a deep dive to explore the Agile concept by introducing a meta-skill termed Agile Kata, defined as a universal pattern for fostering continuous improvement and scientific thinking within organizations. The concept is derived from two pre-existing independent concepts—Agile and Kata—which are blended to create an innovative approach. Agile Kata combines Agile methodologies with structured Kata routines, originally derived from martial arts and the Toyota Production System.
The book is structured into three parts: Part I introduces the foundational concepts of Improvement Kata and Coaching Kata; Part II presents Agile Kata along with the essential elements and techniques required to foster an Agile culture; and Part III provides practical use cases, including retrospectives, Agile team processes, Agile transformations, business agility, and product management. The book emphasizes scientific thinking, experimentation, and continuous improvement in navigating complex and uncertain environments, while highlighting the role of leaders and coaches in building a culture of trust, empowerment, and collaboration.
The book is generally aligned with current trends, addressing the growing need for innovation, adaptability, and sustainable transformation. It challenges conventional Agile practices and introduces a mindset shift that supports continuous improvement, positioning itself as relevant for both present and future discussions. The content is reasonably well organized, with a clear progression from foundational theory to practical application, although at times it may be less clear for beginners distinguishing between traditional Agile concepts and Agile Kata.
A key strength lies in its conceptual contribution, particularly the enhancement of frameworks such as Cynefin and the promotion of a scientific, experimental approach to decision making. However, practical applicability is somewhat limited by the lack of detailed step-by-step guidance, as the book focuses more on shaping thinking than providing direct tools.
The examples and case studies support the concepts presented but are largely drawn from the IT sector, with limited depth in non-IT contexts. From a readability perspective, the book is coherent and structured, though minor grammatical issues and occasional redundancy may slightly affect engagement. The use of metaphors, activities, and reflection sections supports learning and personal growth.
The author’s expertise and active presence in the Agile community add credibility to the work. Supporting elements such as citations and visuals contribute to understanding, though both could be further enhanced in terms of diversity and depth.
Overall, the book provides useful insights and a solid conceptual foundation, with opportunities to strengthen practical application and broaden its relevance across industries.
AIPMO scale
The author has used relevant sources and citations, and the citation style is generally consistent, supporting the book’s readability. A mix of books and articles, both recent and older, is included. However, the diversity of sources is limited, with a strong concentration on the IT/software domain. The lack of critical perspectives on agile frameworks and limited global representation reduce the depth and balance of the research. Including a wider range of viewpoints and more diverse sources would strengthen the overall quality. In this version, citations are embedded within the text and are not clearly highlighted, which reduces their visibility and impact (e.g., the citation of Taiichi Ohno on page 77 and the quote on page 191). This affects how effectively references support the content.
The book includes a limited number of visuals, with the author providing only the essential elements. However, the visuals are simple, easy to understand, consistent, and readable. While this simplicity supports clarity, it also limits the depth and ability to fully convey the underlying meaning, and some visuals are not entirely self-explanatory.
There is room to enhance the book by incorporating more data-driven diagrams and statistical insights, which would strengthen the overall argument by illustrating the global and local adoption of Agile and Agile Kata, as well as their impact on organizations.
At the same time, certain visuals stand out positively—for example, the figure explaining the steps of Agile Kata (Figure 2.4 on page 60), which effectively captures the essence of the concept.
