Study on the Current State of PMOs in Germany
After a 2014 study by GPM found that more than 80% of companies had established one or more Project Management Offices (PMOs), a subsequent study in 2023 revealed that approximately 20% of PMOs were shut down during the pandemic. Even today, in economically challenging times, PMOs face significant pressure to demonstrate their value contribution.
A joint study on the current state of PMOs in Germany by the AIPMO (Association of International Project Management Officers), GPM Deutsche Gesellschaft für Projektmanagement e.V., Projektivisten GmbH, and TEAMWILLE GmbH, under the scientific direction of Alma Mater Europaea University, aims to analyze the current state of PMOs in Germany in order to derive recommendations for action and to further develop PMOs in a targeted manner.
The study is conducted in English to enable international benchmarking. The questionnaire covers both the existence of individual PMOs and the presence of multiple PMOs within a company. It examines six key success factors for PMOs: ‘Strategic Coherence,’ ‘Service Enablement,’ ‘Governance & Authority,’ ‘Integration & Coordination,’ ‘Advisory & Influence,’ and ‘Leadership & Sponsorship.’ The use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) is also addressed in the questionnaire.
The study is accessible via the link below. Answering the questions takes approximately 30 minutes. Responses are processed anonymously. Upon request, after providing an email address, participants will receive a summary of the study results, including a comparison (“benchmark”) of their own results against the overall results. This enables the derivation of concrete recommendations for the further development of PMOs, which are important for successful positioning within the company and for targeted value creation.
The contact person for the study in Germany is Prof. Dr. Reinhard Wagner (Alma Mater Europaea & Projektivisten GmbH), who can be reached at reinhard.wagner@almamater.si.
The study will remain open for participation until the end of September. We encourage all PMO professionals and organizations to take part and contribute to this important research initiative.
